Seeing as how I survived my first week back at classes, I figured I'd go ahead and do a little weekly recap of things that have been going on as well as some pictures I've taken throughout the week.
Tuesdays have become my new favorite days. This is weird because last semester, they were my least favorite days. The difference, however, is that last semester I had a 7:30 organic chemistry lab whereas this semester I only have one class, and it's not until 2:30. Two days a week that I can fairly well sleep in, and a lighter course load in general, makes me a much more pleasant person. I decided to be kind to myself this semester.
As far as classes go, I'm particularly loving my ethics class. The professor is a riot, and the topic just interests me. The only, potential, downfall, is that the class involves reading books. And as much as I love reading, I almost feel less inclined to read when it's being forced upon me. But regardless, reading for class is not near as bad when you're relaxing by a fountain and taking in some vitamin D.
On the topic of vitamin D, this week I also managed to finally get myself out to the apartment pool. This was important because the pool is likely going to close after Labor Day (i.e. it is probably closed now), so this was really my last chance to go until next May.
Anyway, the pool was great. I went with one of my roommates, and we laid out in some chairs to get a little tan, then would sit by the pool with our feet in.
While we were casually soaking our feet and talking, however, we were suddenly interrupted by the presence of a third guest -- a toad. The poor guy nearly scared us to death. He kept swimming around the edges, looking as though he wanted out, so my roommate (being the animal science majors that we are) decided we should try to "help" him. Neither of us wanted to try and touch him, because after all, he's still a toad and who even knows where he's been, so we brainstormed a new solution. We settled on grabbing a styrofoam cup from the apartment office (they have a soda machine with cups and such).
My roommate, Emily, bravely scooped him up out of the water and then planned to just set him down on the ground. But the toad had another idea; instead he jumped out of the cup, flopped onto his head and then just sat there incredibly still. Eventually, thank goodness, he hopped on his merry way and we felt relieved to know that he wasn't dead after his fall.
The same night of the toad incident, I had my first ever shift at work where I was working a new position (i.e. my first day where I wasn't training). To make a long story short, I absolutely loved it. There were some mishaps, and some frustrations, but ultimately I felt a thousand times more comfortable/happy in this position. Whether I will get many shifts with it is still up in the air. But I would easily settle for one shift a week.
In other job related news, I got a second job.
I had heavily debated this for pretty much the whole week. I went back and forth between trying to get a job working with animals, or if I should just try to volunteer at a dog shelter so as to still get experience. Before school even started, however, I received an email about a job involving working with dogs. It sounded perfect, and it was close to my apartment. Before I could talk myself out of forfeiting a chance for something good for me, I decided to apply. The day I turned in my application they also set me up for an interview. The interview was a week or so later, and ended up going really well. A few days later, I got called for a "working interview" which was basically putting me in situations that were likely to occur in the job and seeing how I handled it. Talk about nerve-racking. But they said I did very well, especially considering I've never technically had experience working with animals (besides owning dogs myself, of course). They offered me the job right there (which was actually today), and I decided to take it. I'm nervous, but excited to see where this takes me.
As for some random tidbits from the week -- my planner for this year finally arrived and I am in love. I am an organizer. I obsess about filling out calendars (I used a hanging calendar, my phone calendar, my laptop calendar, AND now my planner calendar). So, I figured this year I could spoil myself a bit, and splurge on a nice planner from Lily Pulitzer. I went back and forth about a million times about the pattern I wanted, but eventually changed my mind completely to choose this one. I've already been furiously writing in it and I love it.
Another thing I received this week was a free t-shirt. I am the free t-shirt queen. I have a problem in which I purposefully scope out situations in which I can receive a free t-shirt, and I stop at nothing. Thankfully, for this one I only had to stand in a line (but a pretty long line at that). But it was worth it. This t-shirt is hilarious and I think I've already worn it for like 3 or 4 days in a row to sleep in.
Besides the excitement of a new position at one job, and then acquiring a new job altogether, I managed to spend some time bonding with one of my roommates (my second roommate was home for the weekend) by cooking a delicious dinner, making chocolate covered strawberries, and watching "Naked & Afraid". Watching "Naked & Afraid" wasn't really on our agenda, it just kind of happened.
I have truly had such an incredible first week, and I feel so lucky for everything that is going on in my life right now. I'm not even sorry for the level of cheesiness that this closer reaches. I have wonderful friends and family, great jobs, and an incredible boyfriend that has already been the most supportive guy in the world through this first week.
I am happy.
