||Day Fifty-Five||
Today was another early start. And this time I had to make an effort to look nice because I was attending my first bridal shower. I was both excited, and nervous, obviously not knowing what to expect, but the day went by smoother than I would have guessed.
My mom and I headed out around 9:45 or 10:00, this time going north for about a two hour drive. As luck would have it, I hadn't brought my anti-nausea tablets (which I hadn't needed for the zoo trip) and ended up feeling somewhat nauseated. Though that was also combined with a slight migraine. Needless to say, it was a bit of a rough start. But we drove through Starbucks, where I passed on my usual order of hot chocolate and instead opted for some food. I got a "Protein Bistro Box" which had muesli bread, peanut butter spread, white cheddar cheese slices, a hard boiled egg, a few slices of apple, and some grapes. It hit the spot and, matched with an aspirin, fixed my migraine so that I was good to go.
Two hours later we arrived at my grandparents house. My grandma, mom, and I talked for a bit, then decided we would get a light lunch before the bridal shower at 2:00. For whatever reason, we decided upon Subway for lunch. We were torn, though, because we thought a salad sounded good, but we also thought their chicken salad sounded good. So we did what America does, and got both. The lady that took our order (via drive-thru) didn't think twice about it, but when we pulled up to the window to pay a perplexed teenaged/twenty-something (maybe) boy came up to the lady so as to confirm that we did in fact want a chicken salad SALAD. That same guy ended up giving us our salad, to which he said:
"This is probably the happiest salad in the whole world."
My mom and I were both confused, but we smiled, said "thank you" and went on our way. But on the way back I got curious. So I pulled out the salad to find he had made a smiley face out of two scoops of chicken salad and a drizzle of the sweet onion dressing. He was right, it was pretty happy.
After lunch, it was shower time. As we walked into the church basement, where the party was being held, I was beyond nervous. Because really, I didn't know anyone besides my mom, my aunt, and my grandma. Obviously, I knew the bride, but my cousin is the groom, so I was more so invited by obligation. Plus I've only really talked to my cousin's soon-to-be-wife maybe once or twice.
The whole party was princess-themed, due to the bride (Bridgette) being the only girl in her family, and thus being referred to as Princess Bridgette all her life (despite her actually being pretty sporty). But it was cute, and everything was pink, and it felt more casual, comforting almost.
Kept things casual and comfy with a dress (which I wore to my graduation), a simple belt that coordinated somewhat with my necklace, my new tribal patterned kimono/cardigan, and some pink/nude wedges.
Perhaps my personal favorite part of the shower, however, was when I won a prize. Now you have to know, I rarely, and I mean RARELY, ever win anything.
The next game was difficult. The bridesmaids had asked the groom, my cousin, questions and then wrote down his answers. The premise of the game was that you had to guess what the groom's response would be. Again, the bridesmaids had the upper hand because they knew things like "when was their first kiss" or "where did they meet" or "what song reminds him of Bridgette". Things that cousins of the groom, and aunts to the groom would probably not know unless you're just really close.
The last game, however, was kind of an ongoing game during the shower. When everyone came in, you were to grab two clothespins (which were painted pink) and clip them onto your shirt, belt, just somewhere they could be seen. And the idea was that you weren't allowed to say the words: "wedding", "bride", "love", or "Jake" (the groom's name). Then whoever had the most at the end of the shower would win something. I didn't really have much of a problem saying any of the words, considering I didn't talk to many people. So by the end of the party, I had my two, I had my mom's two (because she said "Jake" twice, and generously gave them to me), and two from my aunt (who probably also said "Jake", which is her son so I don't blame her, but she also gave hers to me). Anyway, I had 6, which was the most clothespins. I expected something small, the other two game winners had received candles, which I would have been very okay with. But instead they hand me this large gift bag. And when I opened it up there was this ADORABLE handbag.
I've never heard of this brand before, but it's really cute. It's soft on the outside, and has kind of a rhinestone lining on the front. It's kind of a light orange, almost salmon color, so it ended up matching my ensemble! It must have been my lucky day.
Overall, I had a really good time. The drive home seemed tedious after mingling, and once again, we crashed once we got settled back at home. I also started reading "Divergent" on the way home, which I am loving so much already. I'm a little disappointed, now, since I've seen the movie and already know what's coming. But at the same time it helps me envision the characters better. Also the book obviously goes more into depth and is laced with foreshadowing and all kinds of fun things to analyze. If English classes in high school used books like this to teach symbolism and what not, I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more. But I digress. Today was great, I am still giddy with the joy of winning something, and I am ready for a good night's sleep.
